About Our Preschool

We hope that you and your child enjoy being members of our pre-school and that you both find taking part in our activities interesting and stimulating. The staff are always ready and willing to talk with you about your ideas, views or questions.

We want your child to feel happy and safe with us. To make sure that this is the case, the staff will work with you to decide on how to help your child to settle into the setting.

Working Together for your Children

In our setting we maintain a high ratio of adults to children. All staff work every day to enable us to maintain continuity with the children. We also encourage parent helpers where possible to complement the high ratio. This helps us to:

  • Give time and attention to each child
  • Talk with the children about their interests and activities
  • Help children to experience and benefit from the activities we provide
  • Allow the children to explore and be adventurous in safety
  • Allow us to encourage independent learning

Key Persons

At pre-school we operate a key person system. This means that each member of staff has a group of children for whom he/she has a particular responsibility. Your child’s key person will be the person who works with you to make sure that what we provide is right for your child’s particular needs and interests. You will be informed of your child’s key person within the first few weeks of your child starting pre-school and they should be your first point of contact if you have any queries or concerns.

Records of Achievement

At pre-school, we keep a record of achievement for each child.

Staff and parents working together on their children’s records of achievement are one of the ways in which the key person and parent work in partnership.

Your child’s record of achievement helps us to celebrate together his/her achievements and to work together to provide what your child needs for his/her well being and to make progress.

Your child’s key person will work with you to keep this record. To do this you and he/she will collect information about your child’s needs, activities, interest and achievements.

This information will enable the key person to identify your child’s stage of progress. You and the key person will then decide on how to help your child to move on to the next stage.

Special Needs

As part of the setting’s policy to make sure that’s its provision meets the needs of each individual child, we take account of any special needs a child may have. The setting works to the requirements of the 1993 Education Act and The Special Educational Needs Code of Practice (2000).

Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator is Alex Boyce.

Clothing

We provide aprons for the children when they play with messy activities; however we do not force children to wear an apron as this discourages them from taking part and enjoying messy play. Please ensure you send your child in wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting messy.

We encourage children to gain the skills that help them to be independent and look after themselves. These include taking themselves to the toilet and taking off and putting on outdoor clothes. Clothing that is easy for them to manage will help them do this.

We ask parents to bring in a spare set of clothes that can be left on your child’s peg. We go out in all weather so please dress them appropriately and you will need to make sure they have wellies, sunhats, and waterproofs at times.

You will need to ensure that you put sun cream on your child before they come to pre-school.

Snack Bar and Lunch

At pre-school we regard snack and lunch times as an important part of our day. Eating represents a social time for children and adults and helps children to learn about healthy eating. Children sit together with a member of staff while they are eating. We ask parents to provide nutritious food for all meals and snacks, avoiding large quantities of saturated fat, sugar and salt and artificial additives, preservatives, and colourings. We have some samples of what makes a good snack or lunch at pre-school.
